New Stats for DreamHost Web Hosting: August 2, 2010

It is time for our weekly DreamHost review. Every week we look at the change in domain registration numbers for DreamHost. This review will include the number of new domains, number of domains transferred in and out, the number of domains that have been deleted, the net increase (or decrease), and the total number of domains registered at DreamHost. This is just a snapshot from one day. That is one reason we like to do these weekly reviews. By comparing the stats week to week, we get a better overall picture of how DreamHost is doing.

DreamHost new stats:

New domains: 575
Transferred in domains: 418
Transferred out domains: 487
Deleted domains: 593
Net decrease: 87
Total DreamHost domains: 1,020,111

We see that the daily stats are showing a net decrease in domain registrations. If these were the only stats we had, we may think that DreamHost isn't performing as well or that they have some type of issue going on. However, as we compare the overall results with the results from last week. We can see that the total number of domains has increased by more than 3,500 from 1,016,533 to the current 1,020,111. That is why it is so important to review the stats over a period of time. The change in a week time for the previous two reviews were both just under 2,500. So even though we see a net decrease for this one day, it is obvious that this is not a long-term trend that DreamHost has been dealing with.

We have been watching DreamHost for a long time now. Comparing their web hosting package features with those of other top web hosting providers, and reading website hosting reviews to see how happy their customer's are with their services. While all their reviews aren't perfect, they never are anywhere, overall, DreamHost has proven to be a reliable web host provider.

Be sure and check back next week for our latest updates as well as the best deals on DreamHost web hosting.

DreamHost Web Hosting Packing Includes Unlimited Bandwidth

Ok, so DreamHost offers unlimited bandwidth in their web hosting package, what does this mean for you and your website? Essentially, bandwidth refers to the amount of traffic you have to your site, and the amount of information they receive while visiting. The bandwidth is measured by the amount of data that is transferred from your site to their computer. So, when you create your website, if you build your web pages with very large files (ie. a lot of graphics, videos, etc.) then when Internet users go to your site every file they visit will count against your allowable bandwidth.

With "Unlimited Bandwidth" you may be thinking that you do not have to worry about what size your files are, or thinking you shouldn't have to anyway. BUT, in reality how you create your website not only affects you but also all other web sites that may be sharing your server.

Note: If you are concerned about slowing your site due to transfer - See our post on DreamHost Virtual Private Servers.

You can still have an amazing and interesting web site without using a ton of bandwidth, or slowing down everyones site. By doing a few simple things when you are designing/creating your website you and your visitors will have a better experience. By minimizing your server storage, bandwidth, file system, memory, and cpu impact you will be doing your part to insure all sites on your shared web server runs smoothly.

Keep in mind, DreamHost does not allow:

•Copyrighted content you are not the copyright holder of.
•File upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites.
•A site created primarily to drive traffic to another site.
•Making your account resources available (whether for free or pay) to the general public.

This is not only so DreamHost can protect their reputation, by not allowing the small amount of people who want to run free porn affiliate sites or pirated video trading, but for your benefit as well.

DreamHost's Unlimited Bandwidth (Data Transfer) +50GB Policy

DreamHost offers "Unlimited + 50GB" Bandwidth!! But, what exactly does that mean? We wondered the same thing, as when most things are "unlimited" there isn't room for anything else, right? Well, we learned a couple things, One - for over 10 years DreamHost has been trying to stay ahead of the competition by offering more bandwidth than any others. Example:

When other hosts were offering -
10MB DreamHost offered 20MB
50MB DreamHost offered 100MB
500MB DreamHost offered 1GB
100GB DreamHost offered 500GB

So when other hosts decided to offer "Unlimited GB" DreamHost had no choice but to try and "one-up" them by offering "Unlimited +50GB!!" This is obviously a joke and a way to get your attention. But, it goes to show that no matter what the competition decides to offer, DreamHost will do what they can to provide their customers with a little more.

Secondly - We found DreamHost's policy allows 50GB of space for backup use for FREE, and any extra backup space needed for just 10 cents a GB per month. Other "unlimited" hosts do not allow any of your disk space to be used for backup.

DreamHost Offers Ruby on Rails (RoR) FREE w/ Web Hosting

Ruby on Rails (RoR)is just one of many many features offered with DreamHost web hosting package. Ruby on Rails is often shortened to just Rails or RoR, but is the same product registered by all 3 names. Although RoR is an open source web application, DreamHost makes applying it to your website simple by including it in your web hosting package.

So, what can RoR do for you and your website? In March, 2009, RoR released version 2.3 which offers some major new developmens including templates, engines, Rack and nested model forms.
  • Templates allow you to generate a skeleton application with custom configurations.
  • Engines let you reuse application pieces complete with routes, view paths and models.
  • The Rack web server interface allows you to write optimized pieces of code that route around ActionController.
Since it's release RoR is continually keeping up with technology and trying to find way to improve their product. The newest release 2.3.8 was just in May 2010. For those of you who are not familiar with programming these added features help you to easily build your site, and make it more customizable to your site. Ruby on Rails gives you all the basic "out of the box" frameworks to provide you with your basic development environment.

Details on the DreamHost Anti-Spam Policy

Using the Internet for business and marketing opportunities has become the norm for most business websites. Overall, this is a good thing. Consumers are able to find and purchase products and services in their local area, if they are available, or find products worldwide and have them sent directly to their home. Businesses are able to target local customers but are also able to sell their products and services online to a much broader area. Because of the potential benefits of online advertising, some businesses have taken it to an extreme and have started sending messages about their products and services to a mass number of people who may not have any interest in their product or service. This is known as Spam. It is much like junk-mail that everyone dreads getting in their regular mailbox. Typical methods for delivery of spam include: email, instant messaging, mobile phones, and social networking sites.

Because spamming is so cheap, practically free, it has become a favorite method of advertising for many businesses. A business can create a simple email or text message and send it out to thousands of people. As a result, email inboxes are literally flooded with unwanted advertising messages. Some are pretty straight forward about what they advertising, while others purposely try to deceive you by creating fake subject labels like "re: about our plans tonight", making you think that someone is replying to a message you sent. When you open the message it may contain a link with no additional information or may give a brief summary of why you should buy their product or service, or tell you how you can make money online by visiting their site. Many spam emails are also phishing scams that will try and get you to enter a username and password or banking information so they can steal your identity. Many of these will copy company images or logos to make the email look like it came from your bank or another business you may be affiliated with.

DreamHost is aware of what a huge problem this has become and has adopted an Anti-Spam Policy that is in affect for everyone using DreamHost services. The DreamHost Anti-Spam Policy is very specific about what is and is not allowed when you are using their email services and other web hosting tools. Spam is strictly prohibited by DreamHost and will result in immediate termination, without refund, of any account that is found to have used Spam. If you plan to send out any bulk mail messages to your customers, or as part of an advertising campaign, be sure to read the entire Anti-Spam Policy to make sure you are in compliance with the terms and conditions set forth. Some general rules to follow when sending bulk email include:
  1. Always have customers subscribe to a newsletter or advertising campaign
  2. Only send messages to people that have subscribed
  3. Let subscribers know exactly what to expect and how their info will be used
  4. Offer an opt-out or unsubscribe option at the bottom of every message
  5. Don't bombard subscribers with messages that are too long, sent too often, or may be offensive in anyway.
By following a few simple rules and providing people with some common courtesy, you can create a successful online advertising campaign that will be beneficial to both you and your customers. Visit DreamHost for complete details of the Anti-Spam policy as well as a complete list of products and services available. Weekly DreamHost Review + Web Hosting Comparison

Along with our weekly DreamHost review of web hosting stats, we will compare these new stats with the stats of two other popular web hosts: BlueHost and HostMonster. Both BlueHost and HostMonster have been in the web hosting industry for years and are top competitors in the web hosting industry. Each has proven themselves to be reliable web hosts that have all the products and services you will need to create a successful personal or business website. Whether you are looking to create a digital camera review or best day spa review site or just want to share how you make big dreams come true on a real budget. Each host also provides ecommerce tools, if you want to develop a business website to make money online.

New stats for DreamHost:

New domains: 611
Transferred in domains: 407
Transferred out domains: 375
Deleted domains: 342
Net increase: 301
Total DreamHost domains: 1,016,533

BlueHost web hosting stats:

New domains: 708
Transferred in domains: 403
Transferred out domains: 510
Deleted domains: 428
Net increase: 223
Total BlueHost domains: 1,102,247

Registered domains at HostMonster:

New domains: 462
Transferred in domains: 226
Transferred out domains: 381
Deleted domains: 299
Net increase: 8
Total HostMonster domains: 709,278

As we can see from looking at the numbers from our last review a week ago, DreamHost has added 2,470 new domains in just one week! That is a significant increase and holding pretty steady. Their one week increase from the week before was 2,359. Comparing their one day changes with those of BlueHost and HostMonster, we can see that they are showing slightly more activity than either of the other two. DreamHost had a net increase of 301, BlueHost of 223, and HostMonster increased only 8 over all. BlueHost did add more new domains with nearly 100 more than DreamHost.

Because all three of these hosts have proven themselves to be reliable web hosts, we would recommend any of the three. However, we can offer a 25% discount at DreamHost. Just use our coupon code: bestsites25 to save money today!
