In our DreamHost review today we will be talking about what "unlimited hosting" is. You may have noticed on the DreamHost site, they offer "Unlimited + 50 GB", how do you have unlimited + anything? Well according to DreamHost it is sort of a joke, explained by the following example:
"For more than a decade, it's been like:
Other Hosts: "10MB"
DreamHost: "20MB"
Other Hosts: "50MB!"
DreamHost: "100MB!"
Other Hosts: "500MB!!"
DreamHost: "1GB!!"
Other Hosts: "100GB!!!"
DreamHost: "500GB!!!"
And finally:
Other Hosts: "UNLIMITED GB!!!!"
.....to which we had no choice but to reply....
"UNLIMITED + 50GB!!!!"
DreamHost goes on to explain that there really is some significance to the + 50 GB, at DreamHost they provide you with 50GB of space for website backups, FREE. Other "unlimited" hosts don't allow ANY of your disk space for backups! In our DreamHost review we found that while unlimited doesn't mean "do whatever you want", it means that no matter how popular your site gets you won't have to worry about not having enough disk storage or not being able to handle the traffic load (hence the unlimited bandwidth). You are still responsible for managing your files and optimizing your site so that you aren't causing issues for other users on the server. This really isn't any different than the requirements of any other web host, you just have to read the fine print to understand it.
